Milestones

Every so often a parent is blindsided by a milestone they weren't expecting. And yesterday my oldest son caught me off guard with another one I was not prepared for.

I was sitting at my computer when *bling*, I received an email from him. Yes, he sometimes communicates with us through email - FROM THE BASEMENT. But hey, we'll take what we can get. Anyway, in his email he had links to 3 colleges he was interested in learning more about.

Holy crap, COLLEGES??? That can't be right. I know for a fact it was just a few years ago that we were celebrating his first birthday.

And for sure only a few months ago he and his brother braved the elements at Cub Scout camp

And definitely just a few weeks ago we attended his freshman band concert

And now he's talking about college. Whoa.

But that's the beauty of parenthood - it never stops giving. I can't even imagine how different life would be without these kids to provide all those moments of need, challenge, frustration, pride and joy. What would we have done all these years without having to attend all those Cub Scout meetings, school plays and band concerts? And now we get to look forward to high-school drama, college, new careers, weddings, grandchildren, first-time home purchases and on and on.

It's like we've given birth to a batch of Energizer bunnies.

But of course I wouldn't have it any other way. So yes, here comes another milestone, but it isn't the first - and it won't be the last.

Welcome to the club!!! You're right--it seems like yesterday Brandon was a tiny baby in a playpen in our living room and I was baby sitting him during the day while you were in school and Charli was working. And I was loving every minute of it!!! And now he's talking college? No-No-No!!!

Brandon already knows more about computers than most college graduates. I am glad he realizes that he still must jump through the hoops for his sheepskin and one of the better jobs.

He's going to kill you for posting that baby picture. I've just had to go to my teenagers school to discuss pre-requisists for what she wants to study at university... and she's only 15!!! Where did the time go? Ack!!!!

I'm so teary eyed just thinking about my children going off to college...leaving me. Sniff sniff!!

Your kids are so lucky to have such awesome parents like you folks, I hope they realize that. I'm sure they do.

mom - Talk about milestones... you two are due for some great-grandkids before too long. Not from this camp of course.

dad - Yeah, at this time he is interested in pursuing an education in computer/digital forensics. That is sooo him.

mooselet - How could anybody not wuv that widdle cutsie wootsie baby picture? *URP* Sorry.

karl - No kidding. Here I am minding my own business and then he's all "Hey - don't forget about this whole 'college' thing pops!"

waya - Aw, thanks. Your kids have pretty rockin parents themselves!

My oldest turned 21 a couple of months ago and my youngest will be 18 next week. My 20 year old nephew just got married. I've been clobbered by milestones recently and they certainly are bittersweet!

My kid went to Physics Camp at Stanford based on an e-mail application they sent him. While there he went to the recruitment seminar too. I am cooked.

Welcome to the club.

Congrats on getting this far!
