Forty-three years ago today a cute little girl named Charlotte was born in St. Louis.
Today, depending on who you are, this girl may also be known as:
Chuck or Chuckie - by her siblings
Charlotte - by her customers
Char - by her current circle of friends
Char-Char - by her dad (when she was young)
Mom - by our kids
Mrs. Lee - by the kids at my daughter's school
Charli - by my family and me (but only when I refer to her in 3rd person), or most commonly...
Honey or Hon - by me, the only way I refer to her in person. I know, don't bother to say it... *Urp*
Because she was named the exact same name as her mother Charlotte, Charli Jr. decided very early on in life that she wanted (and needed) her own identity. When Charli was a teen and young adult, her mom would often "mistakenly" open her mail, or take a personal phone call from her doctor, or tell a boy that she wasn't interested.
Ok, that last one didn't happen - as far as she knows. But still, the point was - Charli hated being named the same as her mother, and did everything in her power to establish her own identity whenever possible - often times to the chagrin of her parents.
And now today Charli is most definitely her own person in every way possible. She's smart, confident, successful and... oh yeah, stubborn too. But in a good way of course.
So happy birthday to my wife, my lover and my best friend. You may be known as Charlotte on your driver's license, but you'll always be "honey" to me.
