Calling all geeks... Calling all geeks

I'm at my wit's end here folks, and I need someone way smarter than me to figure this out.

Fortunately, according to my stats, I have an average of 200 different people reading this blog on any given day. If even one of you is geeky enough (and I use that term in only the most complimentary context) to figure out my problem I will be forever indebted to you.

And... anyone who helps me will be guaranteed a hardy public THANK YOU right here on this blog. Plus, you will get to claim this crown as your own.

Here's my problem:

Ever since I switched my domain name from "blogspot" to my own custom name, (I know... *yawwwn* did he just say "domain name?") my RSS feeds have not been registering on other people's applications.

For example... When I leave comments on blogs that use Comment Luv, my "last post" won't show up unless I format my blog name in this EXACT format.

Here's what I have to enter: http://www.viewfromthecloud.blogspot.com even though my actual domain name is www.viewfromthecloud.com
If I use any other version (meaning without the "http", the "www" or "blogspot") it simply won't work. This seems most odd to me.

Likewise, whereas every other blogger in the world shows up right away at Humor-blogs.com, my posts don't show up until about 12 hours later - or sometimes not until the next day. Even worse, sometimes they don't show up AT ALL! And since Diesel switched the scoring routine to only show posts from the current day, my latest posts are not even making it to the main page anymore. This is most disturbing.

So if you feel you can help, please leave a comment or send me an email, and I will supply you with all the technical details and passwords you want. Like I told Diesel the other day as I was whining about it for the 100th time...

I just want to be loved. Is that so wrong?

I am not geeky enough to help you. I can only love you AND tell you that my posts never show up right away on HB either. So maybe I need to call some geeks myself.

I hope you get an answer from one of your many geeky readers.

Do I get a crown for being the first commenter?

I am not geeky enough to help you either, but I can tell you that I have my own domain name which is purely and simply an 'http' *insert name *.com* and it shows up in CommentLuv just fine.

Perhaps you should ask your host/ISP?

Gah. Miss-typed it!!! LOL!

Hmm. It always has shown up, until now... maybe you do have a problem!

Have you tried hitting it with a hammer?

(when I'm not smart enough to figure something out, I'm smart enough to call someone who can! I wont tell you how often that happens!)

Not geeky enough to understand, sorry. Heck I changed the title of my blog and in some feeds it shows up as the new title, in others the old - I be so confused.

I also just changed my name to my real name on the blog as well, so I am curious how it will show up here. Will Mylhibug keep racking up stats, or will Roger start at zero... Only time will tell I guess.

Cause, like you, I just want to be loved, or at least liked a little. :)

Use fedburner for your feed and everything will be redirected through that then everything should update fine if you add the new feed addresses to the places that require them.

Hey Jeff. First time caller. Ms. Kathy was putting the call to arms on twitter to have a look-see.

1) My RSS auto discovery in FireFox shows no issue. I have successfully added you to my Google Reader.
2) Congrats on your domain name registration. Smart move. Better move would be to leave Blogger.com altogether and get WordPress as your platform. See Kathy at junkdrawerblog as she has successfully done this.
3) It takes time for search engines to re-crawl your new domain address and to index them as such. You have firmly established yourself (as far as Google is concerned) as your old address. Give this a bit to work itself out.
4) There are great Wordpress widgets (add-ons and plug-ins) that help optimize all of the things you are looking to iron out. I'm not a Blogger.com fan (I think the hoops you have to jump through as a non blogger member to add a comment are ridiculous.) so I don't know the inner workings of the beast, but my first comments are my gut feeling.

Well, I saw this post on Humor-blogs. Can't help with your issue, though. I used to blog on my own domain, but quit because getting it to work the way I wanted was a pain.

Hey let's try this ->

You are using feedburner for RSS subscriptions so let's check the following settings.

1. Login to your feedburner account.

2. Click Edit Feed Details and check if the url typed there is correct it should be http://www.viewfromthecloud.com/feed

3. Then click on Optimize >> Convert Format Burner. Make sure this service is deactivated

4. Visit this page http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/ping and check if the ping is successful

5. If everything everything is ok so far click Troubleshootize and follow the steps.

I am sure this will help if not do let me know here http://www.mohitaneja.com

I'm sorry, were you saying something?

I personally really like Dan's advice...BFH.

Heather said...

Oh, and send some of those readers my way...Feedburner says I have 52-59 subscribers. Which I really don't understand how my subscribers could vary daily. Do people really subscribe and unsubscribe that often?

I need a blog promotion/subscription tutorial.

Sorry, dude. You know I've tried to figure out what's going on. The feed looks fine in my browser, but for some reason H-B just doesn't see the latest post for a while. Something is caching something somewhere, but I'll be darned if I know what.

geakz is all wet re: Wordpress vs. Blogger. I still use classic Blogger because I have more freedom to do what I want. Wordpress is very restrictive. I agree about Blogger's commenting thing though, which is why I built my own....

Hi Jeff, Kathy sent me here after announcing your problem on Twitter.
It looks like your domain is doing a permenant redirect from http://... to http://www...

Step 1.
First of all check the settings by logging to the control panel of your website at your hosting provider and see if there are any 301 permenant redirects. If you don't find it, don't worry and go to Step 2.

Step 2.
Navigate to the /www folder on your server and look for a file called .htaccess
It may be hidden from view so make sure you are able to see all hidden .files.
If it does not exist, skip to Step 3.

Edit the .htaccess file and look for the following code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^viewfromthecloud.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.viewfromthecloud.com$1 [R=301]

if it exists, delete it.

Step 3.
If the .htaccess file does not exist then you need to create one. Make sure you put the . before the htaccess in the file name.
Add the following code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.viewfromthecloud.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://viewfromthecloud.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Save the file. Go to http://www.viewfromthecloud.com/ It should redirect to http://viewfromthecloud.com/

Keeping my fingers crossed hoping all this works !

You lost me at "RSS". Apparently I'm not a geek. DANGIT, I thought I finally fit in somewhere. Maybe I can pull this out? Lets see...advice...I have an idea.

Build a bomb out of a dead cat, and blow up the sonofabitch computer. Thats it. Carry on

Elizabeth said...

Sorry, as much as I'd love for you to be forever indebted to me, you lost me at "domain name".

Your feed is registering just fine..

EVERYONE...

Thank you all for chiming in! I don't have time tonight to respond to everyone's comments, but I would like to address a few of the technical ones:

geekz: I've actually been on my own domain name for several months now so I don't believe it needs any more time to crawl or propagate. I also don't have the time or guts to move over to Wordpress.

mohit: Thanks for the suggestions, but I've pinged and troubleshootized and resynced a hundred times and it doesn't change anything. Also, my format converted was set as deactivated.

diesel: I do want to thank you for trying to help me with this. You've been very gracious for putting up with my whining.

jaffer: You kind of lost me at step 1. Blogger itself is my hosting provider so I don't actually have a control center (besides Blogger).
Step 2... same issue. I don't think I can navigate to any of my folders on Google/Blogger. At least not that I'm aware of. If I can, I'd love to know how and where they are. So in a nutshell, I'm pretty sure my problems have to be solved within the Blogger or Feedburner platforms.

Memarie Lane said...

Jeff, I'm having Feed issues too, but not as bad as yours. I burned a new feed for my new URL, but apparently the old feed is still working? I don't even know. I have no idea how many subscribers I have anymore, the numbers have not changed a bit since the new Feed confusion. I just decided not to worry about it, but I wouldn't mind a solution.

yellojkt said...

That is what you get for leaving the comfort and security of blogspot. Sorry, I'm no help.

Susan said...

eek, wish I could help! :(

Ricardo Bueno said...

Hey, not sure if you got the help you needed... I use feedburner for my blog's feed. On a former blog of mine, I foolishly changed the feed address and lost my subscribers. What I did was post an announcement informing everyone of my foolish mistake asking them to resubscribe. Just a thought...

Jess Riley said...

See, this is exactly why I'm sticking with blogspot, even though I now also have my own domain. Because I am a curmudgeon, a luddite, and this kind of sh*t will happen.

Did you set up a CNAME record on your own domain?

http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55373

Your feed autodiscovery is badly configured, you have four feeds set up, here is the HTML code from your header:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="View from the Cloud - Atom" href="http://www.viewfromthecloud.com/feeds/posts/default" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="View from the Cloud - RSS" href="http://www.viewfromthecloud.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="View from the Cloud - Atom" href="http://www.viewfromthecloud.com/feeds/6461360421281947095/comments/default" />
<link href='http://feeds.feedburner.com/ViewFromTheCloud' rel='alternate' title='RSS 2.0' type='application/rss+xml'/>

If you are going to use feedburner, you should remove the references to the internal feeds (and 301 redirect them to the feedburner feeds).

HTH,
JP

The person who helped me with my RSS feeds, in fact the person who told me that they weren't working at all (then I had to ask him what they were) was Dan of All That Comes With It, but, erm, he's gone out for a walk and may not be back for some time...

Roger said...

Did you do something recently? Because this post popped back into my Google Reader today (about 2 hours ago)?

Either that or my blog is stuck. :)

Corrina said...

I had that same problem when I moved to my own server- but you didn't do that... you just got a new domain.

In my experience it's taken some time for everything to catch up to the new route.

Sorry that wasn't helpful.

Uh, you rock! (Does that help? LOL)

Maureen said...

Jeff: Can't help you with the Humor Blogs part, but I do know that Comment Luv does not see me either when I use my own domain name... so it's not just you!

Jeff said...

maureen - That actually helps to know. Maybe it's bug with Comment Luv and I'm chasing ghosts here. Even with all the wonderful advice, I never did get it resolved, so after tonight I'm going to give up.

But I still would like to thank everyone who contributed and tried. You all rock!!!

Sornie said...

A little late to the party as usual but it might have something to do with which feed people are pickign up. If you are using a meta redirect tag from your old blogspot address, people may still be subscribed to that address' feed which could slow things down. I know that my feed via feedburner takes about 4 hours to show up in my own reader.

Brandon Lee said...

Here is your issue:
When you type in ViewFromTheCloud.com in the address bar, it redirects you to http://viewfromthecloud.blogspot.com/ and hides the address. This should work fine, except for the fact that there is that extra slash at the end.

The reason this is an issue is the "last post" thing you are talking about looks for the RSS feed from your website. On most blogs the RSS feed is found in 1 of 2 places:
/rss.xml
/feed

The issue is that your redirect is pointing to http://www.viewfromthecloud.blogspot.com/ and the link is looking for /rss.xml or /feed . So in theory, the link is really http://www.viewfromthecloud.blogspot.com//rss.xml
If you try and type that into your browser you will get a 400 error.

Try switching the redirect to http://www.viewfromthecloud.blogspot.com without the slash.

If that doesn't work, you may have to host your own rss.xml file.

Brandon Lee said...

Also, a feedburner and Firefox recognize the rss feed because they follow the redirect before looking for the xml file.
