Before I finish all my terrific Toronto tales and other vacation stories, I'm going to take a few days off to write my 500th post (woo-hoo!)
But before I do that, I'd like to give a shout out to Kathy, for taking the initiative and time to drive all way up to Toronto to meet with me - AND to Maureen for taking the detour to meet up with me last Sunday as well.
Let's start with...
I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Maureen, her husband and lovely daughter here in St. Cloud on Sunday as they were passing through town on their way from Winnipeg to Minneapolis for a vacation. Instead of just barreling past town on the interstate at 70 mph, Maureen was kind enough to take the exit and meet me, Charli and Roseanna at a local burger joint for lunch.
She and her family are extremely nice people and Maureen and I hit it off like old childhood friends. And, as if taking the extra time to stop by wasn't nice enough, she also brought me delicious Canadian candy treats and made me a super sweet card. Thank you!!!
Thanks Maureen, Herbert and Heather. You guys rock and are welcome here ANY time you're passing through town.
Here we are at the delicious Five Guys Burgers and Fries joint having... well - burgers and fries!
I could easily write 10 posts about the awesome time we had with Kathy, Ann and Regan in Toronto. These three ladies are charming, gracious and a total blast to hang out with, and if you ever get the chance to meet them... take it!
Kathy is exactly like you'd expect her to be based on her writing: funny, charming, and yes - even bumbling. But in that adorable way you think she is.
Suffice it to say that our adventures in trying to: figure out which streetcar to ride, buy our tickets for The Ex, find something to drink, find allergy relief for my daughter, and hail a cab were all highly entertaining events. At least to us.
But to me the funniest transaction that took place the whole day was the process of simply trying to meet for the first time. In what could only be described as the most pathetic attempt at communication since Abbot and Costello's Who's On First routine, Kathy and I mangled what should have been a pretty straight-forward mission... MEET FOR DINNER.
Click the "Read More..." link below if you want to read the transcript of our texts, voice mails and phone conversations from that very attempt. But be warned - this might be a little hard to follow. However, it will be hysterical to Kathy, Ann, Regan and me - and that's what really matters.
Kathy (2:58) text - during the drive into Toronto: We are starving now. we are close but hitting some traffic. Should we eat light now then meet later tonight? Don't know what to do.
Jeff (3:00) text: Sounds good. We are starting a castle tour now. We can hook up after that for whatever.
(at this point I assume my "sounds good" confirms that Kathy should eat now and will not join us for dinner)
J (3:47) text: So we will eat now too. Maybe after CN tower we can grab dessert?
(my confirmation that we are indeed going to eat dinner separately and we'll just have dessert with them later instead)
K (3:49) text: We are here. What time should we meet at the CN tower?
(I assume Kathy has already eaten and wants to meet at the tower after my kids and I have eaten)
J (3:56) text: If we eat now we will need some time. Is 6 too late or do you want to do something sooner?
K (4:03) text: Can you try for 5:30? We will go there by then and hang out.
(I'm thinking she's asking if we can finish up our dinner sooner than 6:00, but Kathy is really trying to tell me she wants to join us for dinner earlier than 6:00 because she's starving)
J (4:10) text: Sounds good!
(...that I'll do my best to wrap up dinner by 5:30 so I can meet you after that)
K (4:11) text: Yea!
(...we're going to eat with Jeff at 5:30!)
K (4:41) voice mail to me: "Hey Jeff, it's Kathy. We're here. I don't know where to tell you to meet us except maybe, there's this like cement up-ramp in the area of the tour, where the tour people come out? I don't know if that's helpful. And it's close to the bridge that goes over the railroad tracks here so we'll keep looking for you."
(Kathy declines to tell me that she has actually left her cell phone at her hotel and is now using her sister's phone)
J (5:00) voice mail to Kathy's phone: "Hey Kathy. We've been running into a lot of delays so we just ordered our food. We may be a little late. We're just a few blocks away from the CN tower at Wally McGoos. You're welcome to join us if you want. See you as soon as we can."
(I leave this on Kathy's voice mail, which of course she doesn't have with her)
(5:45) Ann calls me just as we're finishing up dinner: "Jeff where ARE you guys?!"
