The Joys of Parenthood

Uh.... OK. And just what the hell is that you ask?

Do you remember when I was whining about the fact that I lost my camera? And do you remember how happy I was when I finally got a new one for Christmas?

Wel l l l l l l l...

What you're looking at up there at the top is a cell phone picture of my camera WITHOUT its SD card. That's because the last time I tried to use the camera it returned the message "No memory card." Of course when I asked my darling children if anyone had taken it, I got the exact same response from each one of them.

I'll give you one guess what that was.

Then today, in an unrelated incident, I received this gem in the mail from Austin's high school

I do have to admit though that I got a chuckle out of the fact that their main complaint was that he was "taping another student up in an area that is off limits during lunch time."

Lesson here is that if you're going to tape up another student, you need to do it in an approved area.

Did Austin and his friends use a good quality tape? If they're gonna do it, they might as well do it right!

Oooh, did he tape his buns together like in Breakfast Club?
Did you ask where the appropriate area is for taping other students? I mean, really, is it a fair punishment for him to get detention for not standing in the "taping students" area if it's not designated as such?

I'm assuming 'lunch detention' involves sitting somewhere (probably a taped-off area) during lunch and NOT ladling out gray-green peas in a hairnet for four days.
Seems like kind of a steep penalty for being in an off limits area, was actual tape involved? I'm confused. There is little evidence of actual heinousness here.

And I'm not just prejudiced because I think your son is super cool.

Honest.

My first thought was that he was taping, as in videotaping, someone using the missing memory card from your camera.

You switched gears too quickly for my brain.

So the answer to your question was... "No Dad, you were the last one to use it, remember?"

How far 'Up' were they taping this other student? Is the 'taped' student being held responsible for allowing himself to be taped in an unauthorized area? Is the person being taped a he or a she?

So did you find your SD card, or just go out and buy another one?

You did switch gears a bit quick - at least for my tired brain. I was waiting for the link to the memory card in the taping story ;O)
It does rather depend on just where they were taping this other person like, was it in the 'principle's' office?

Taping them doing what? Have you heard of 'sexting'?

You sure have a lot of us guessing just what you are telling us.

Four days of lunch detention for that?! Wow, what happens if they catch a kid smoking in the bathroom? Beheading??

I was thinking memory card, too. Then I realized taping and fell out laughing. That's worth detention.

Not that I condone detention worthy behaviors of any kind. As a parent I'm supposed to be against that sort of thing.

travis - I hope so. I'd hate to think I raised a kid who would resort to cheap tape. I personally like the duct tape with the cloth threads in in. Not that crappy plastic stuff.

april - Hmmm... let's not give him any loophole ideas.

shieldmaiden96 - He claims he was an innocent bystander. I'm not buying it.

idaho dad - I can see why you were confused. Actually, if you phrased it differently it would read just like that. "...taping another student - up in an area that is off limits during lunch time."

roger - Apparently they taped him to a garbage can. And no, I'm not planning on buying a new card because I'm hoping to find my old one. That same way I didn't buy a new camera for 6 months when I lost my old one. Oy.

beetle - No, it was in a hallway by some lockers. Apparently you can't be in the hallways during lunch hour. Who knew?

yello - No, I haven't heard of that before. But they weren't "taping" as in videotaping... they were literally taping another student with tape. Kids.

bill - Now you know how I feel... when I read some of your comments. har har ;-)

elizabeth - Come on... "Everybody knows that smoking ain't allowed in school."

ed - Like I said, it made me chuckle too. But shhhh... don't tell Austin.

Did I hear Charli here in Duluth! Ha, Ha. I just hope Austin was not being a bully, which is not like him.

Interesting. I'm SO looking forward to the high school years. So ahhhhh. On the positive side, I thought your new camera was broken not just missing an SD card. It kinda looked like you ran over it with something.

Like with duct tape? That is just so awesome!

You're failing your fatherly teaching duties if your kids don't know that zip-ties are far superior to tape (especially in the binding people category)...

Charli said...

Bill, That was a good one! Except I snickered a little too and figured eating in the detention room was enough punishment for anyone - besides, apparently Kyle asked to be taped up!

Jeff said...

bill - No, they were just screwing around. The kid they taped up one a close friend of theirs.

michelle - You ain't seen nothin yet baby. I remember when my kids were little like yours. Ahhhh indeed.

ve - Yeah, leave it to you to be impressed by that. I figured as much ;b

theresa b - Please... don't give him any ideas!

charli - And didn't Austin say he was taking advantage of this detention time by catching up on his homework and studying harder for his tests?

bwahahahahaha! Now THAT was a good one!

When I was in high school, people got detention for things like smoking in the bathroom. Now it's high tech crimes in non-designated areas. My how we've evolved!

Jacki said...

LOL! Oh I cannot help but crack up! I also have to laugh at the way the school phrased it. Made it seem like he was taping another students genitals or something. Which would have been even funnier.

Don't leave us hanging! Where is the bloody SD card??? I need closure on that anecdote!

Jeff said...

mom thumb - I dunno... it seems like duct-taping someone to a garbage can is about as low tech as you can get!

jacki - That's true too... if you consider the phrase "up in an area that's off limits" you're exactly right.

rizzo - I have no idea where it is! That's the precise problem. But it's paralyzing me to go out and buy another one because I'm still hoping to find this one.

That school thing is so tragically typical. These schools educate our future. Scary.
And boy can I relate, to both of those stories.

So what, dear parent, was his punishment? Make sure it's something that Rosie can videotape him doing so that we can all watch on Youtube!
