I hate it when that happens

Me, at a family gathering on Tuesday, talking to my cousin's husband:

3:00 "Hi Jim. Great to see you again!"

5:00 "Jim, can I get you something to drink?"

7:00 "It was fantastic to see you again Jim. Can I get your cell phone number?"

Email received yesterday from my brother:
"...I forgot to tell you Jeff, you were calling Paula's husband Jim. Jim was her first husband."

D'OH!

So uh yeah, thanks Rick. I appreciate you telling me... now.

Priceless! Family gathering are great aren't they.
When we first got married my great aunt in Pennsylvania use to send us Christmas cards addressed to me and my ex-boyfriends first name and my husbands last name.

I have a story like that, but I'm too lazy to type it. I'll share it over cocktails sometime. Or podcast it. Or something.

Which is why I was all too happy to miss my husband's family reunion because I was in Chicago that day.

Good one, Bob. Oh, wait. You're Jeff.

Ouch. I thought at first someone was calling YOU Jim!

"Dammit Jim, I'm not a mind-reader!"

Oh dear. How embarrassing. I say keep calling him Jim and come up with some story about how you call all cousin-in-laws Jim... or how you suffer from some horrible mind wasting disease. Or both.

sue - The family gathering was actually very nice. It's just that I've only actually gathered with Jim... er, Bill a few times in the past - so the original hubby's name was still stuck in my brain.

gette - Maybe you can sing it to me over karaoke.

kathy - Good one. Blogher to the rescue!

maureen - Not a mind reader OR a blog reader? (haha)

heather - Yeah, very funny indeed.

mooselet - I was very embarrassed by that. In fact, I even sent him an apology text on my cell phone, but I didn't get a response back yet. His number is probably a land line. That would be my luck.

Or worse yet--you sent the text to the original Jim.

Was the picnic in St Cloud? Then you can you blame it on Stearns County Syndrome.

HAHAHA! You big oaf! (Meant in a kind way)

You know, there was nothing stopping Rick or Jim or whatever his name was from telling you, Hey, bub, wrong name! I'd feel kind of weird conversing with someone who kept calling me the wrong name. I'd feel compelled to correct them for their own sake.

ed - It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

caron - No, we were down in the cities. The main problem is that my cousin lives in Oklahoma, and I only see them for a few minutes like every 5 years. I don't stand a chance with people's names. Heck, I can barely remember my own kids' names.

michelle - Unfortunately, this gathering was the result of my uncle's passing, but it was still a very nice event and allowed us to be together again for the first time in a long time. It was a bittersweet day.

jd - I think Rick secretly enjoyed that... kind of like the way Robert enjoys it when Raymond has to squirm.

Serves him right for not correcting you the first time!

Bill said...

Don't fret. Bill is a Colonel in the regular army, and even a nice guy like him might be suprised by names enlisted men call him in private.

Jeff said...

mulled vine - Yeah... I got him good. Bwahahaha!

bill - Yes... I'm quite sure he's heard worse than "Jim."

Don't feel bad, Randy does crap like that all the time.

"Jim" should have told you, I wonder if he didn't complain because his wife calls him that? Sorry, I try to never pass up some sophmoric humor if I can, and the opportunity was there for the taking.

I'll go back to mature commenting later. :)

Hahaha...I just wonder what "Jim" was thinking the whole time?
