My First Time

Hey everyone... this week is my four year blogiversary!

665 posts.

How crazy is that?

I was originally going to wait to publish this until next Monday, my actual anniversary date, but I don't have anything else queued up right now so we're gonna celebrate early.

So yeah baby, 4 years! That's a long-ass time. What really cracks me up is that I had a total phobia about starting this blog in the first place. I know, you'd never guess that now. Anyone who can churn out posts loaded with embarrassing pictures and poop stories on a regular basis could not have been too uptight about blogging. But check out my first post here. It really wasn't that easy for me.

In fact, I remember that first post like it was yesterday {{{cue swirly, blurry flashback effect}}}

I hadn't told anyone I was thinking about doing this. But after 3 false starts I finally got the guts to go through with it. I nervously clicked "Publish Post," wondering if anyone would see it. What if it shows up on that Blogger banner and someone actually clicks on it! For some silly reason I was embarrassed by the whole thing.

Then, after I had written a half dozen posts or so, I meekly mentioned to my wife that I had "started writing in a blog," as if she was going to burst into laughter and make me feel like a fool for thinking I was qualified to do so. But instead, I was relieved to see that she was smiling as she began reading my work.

I don't know where this insecurity came from, but it didn't take long for me to get over it and jump in with both feet. Soon I was telling my family and closest friends that I was now "a blogger," like I was somebody important, and inviting everyone I knew to check it out.

I started getting a few comments right away from my family but it didn't take long for me to figure out that if I visited other people's blogs and left comments there, it would entice them to come on over and see what I was up to.

Now of course 4 years later I can churn out a blog post and not even think about it. In fact, sometimes when I go back through my archives I don't even remember some of the posts I've written. At least I think I wrote them.

But the best part of blogging for me is the awesome friends I've "met" all over the globe. In fact, my goal is to someday go on a world tour and visit every one of you. And it wouldn't even cost that much since you would gladly put me up and feed me for free. I know this because I only allow people who would feed me for free to visit my blog. It's one of those lesser known filters that Blogger has.

So thank you everyone who has stopped by to share my view from St. Cloud over the last 4 years - and that's not just the 50 or so of you who comment on a regular basis. According to my Feedburner stats, there are over 180 people who read this blog via their feed readers. In fact, I think it would be awesome if those of you who have never commented before could poke your head up today and just say "hi," so I can "meet" you as well and thank you personally. :-)

And for those of you I do know, I'd recommend getting that spare bedroom ready... because I'm itchin to hit the road!

Happy Birthday Jeff ! Spewing bullshits 600+ times in 4 years is c.r.a.z.y.
I began blogging the same time around you did but I haven't even got to half of half of that !

Sending much blog love your way--Congrats on 4 years! 665 posts is very impressive, you should be proud. And if you are ever in PA I'd put you up, as long as you could convince my family that you aren't a serial killer.

Kathy said...

Congratulations, Jeff! Four years is a long time in blogger years, or is that dog years? Anyway, if you want to come to PA, you can kill Susan and me with one stone. No, don't actually kill us. We live in the same city. So, no killing. And you could meet Dave-who-only-comments-once-a-year. And I could see you twice in my lifetime! I'll always remember meeting you in Toronto and your family dragging me and my family around until our feet bled. Good times.

Anyway, happy blogoversary. Aren't you glad you got over your nervousness? We have been so blessed by your poop posts. {wipes a tear}

Alright, since you asked for us anonymous ones to come out, I'll let my presence be known. I'm a lurker. I found your blog through Kathy's (another blog I've been following but never commented on - I'm sorry!!!), sometime over the summer. I'd guess maybe around May or June? Anyways, I spent several days just reading through all the entries (thank you for making my work days more bearable, by the way!). I got hooked on both blogs because of the humorous ways you tell stories. I love blogs that can make me laugh, and you both do that so well. Funny stories, but with a lot of heart.

Anyways, I've always been more of a reader than a talker, hence why I rarely comment. I apologize! But do know that I am around, enjoying everything you and Kathy and others write. Congrats on four years - it is quite impressive! :)

jaffer - Fortunately spewing BS comes easy for me. ;-)

susan - Sorry Susan... there are no guarantees. You're just going to have to risk it.

kathy - Well technically I would have to kill more than one person if I'm going to qualify as a serial killer like Susan said - and being so close would be very helpful.

remy - Thank you for poking your head up! No apologies necessary... I just wanted the opportunity to say hi to you folks. So... HI! :-)

congrats little brother! You've made me laugh more than once...because you have a sick and twisted sense of humor--leaning toward the edge...LOVE IT---keep up the good work-and may you have another 4 good years of writing.

You'd better blow out that candle before it burns something down!

Congrats -- and now I know why you let me read your blog. It's all those yummy recipes and discussions of cooking I have, isn't it? That and you like the toasty weather in Chicago. ;)

Heather said...

Congrats Jeff!

We're still working on the home addition so you'll have to wait to visit. No spare room at the moment.

I'm one of those fifty or so that always comments (and fifty is A LOT) but happy blogiversary anyways.

Happy Blogging birthday, Hon. Don't ever stop!!! My day isn't complete until I've read your blog, and that's the truth! I LOVE it!!!

Elizabeth said...

I can't remember how I found your blog, but I'm glad I did! I enjoy reading your posts, they always make me laugh! Happy blogger anniversary!!

Chris C said...

Congrats man! Four years wow. I remember finding you through Humor Blogs over two years ago and I've been a faithful reader ever since.

Oh and if your road trip swings through southern NH or thereabouts let me know. You've got a free couch to stay on. :)

Happy blogiversary!

I have some brownies here that will be perfect for celebrating the occasion.

Since you're not here, I'll just have to eat them all myself.

It's ok.
I don't mind.

Congrats on your milestone -- 4 years is a big deal! I laughed out loud at your first post. Thanks for sticking it out -- enjoy your posts.

Happy blog birthday!

I know what you mean about not remembering writing some of your posts. I had a trawl through my archives the other day and was amazed at the stuff I didn't remember.

Idaho Dad said...

Happy Bloggingiversary! I love all these new blog-related words we get to invent.

Hey, if you can't remember all the posts you wrote, then you won't mind if I borrow a couple of them? :)

Dave2 said...

I, on the other hand, don't remember my first blog post at all. :-) Happy blogiversary!

Happy Blog-o-versary!

Four years is definitely a long time in this biz. You're like the grandfather of bloggers! Tell us a story, wise old man. Just make sure it doesn't include any underage nude swimming.

Congratulations, Jeff. We're all very glad you took that first step.

Jeff and Charli Lee said...

sis - Thanks for all your sister support over the years. You've always been there to encourage me... even though you didn't really have a choice.

michelle - And I expect a yummy meal the next time I roll through tropical Chicago too!

heather - That's ok. Your bedroom will be fine. You and Craig can sleep on the couch.

yellojkt - Thanks, you're one of my original gang. I think I picked up my first batch of readers from Dave.

mom - Holy cow... that's a lot of pressure mom. ;-)

elizabeth - I think one of my posts became untethered and floated up to Alaska and landed in your back yard. Something like that.

chris c - Excellent! I've always wanted to go to southern NH. MUCH nicer than that slummy nnw NH.

janna - See, that's the sacrifice of a true friend. Thanks Janna!

thewordwire - Thanks! I've never been accused of "sticking it out" before. Well, at least I've never gotten caught for it.

dan - Who are you again?

idaho dad - Don't laugh. I've heard many stories of people having their posts ripped off and republished word for word by someone else. In fact, both Kathy and Dave2 have experienced this.

dave2 - Thanks Dave. You're one of the handful of bloggers I know who have been blogging longer than me. Hell, longer than everybody! I think your blog was one of the very first I started following and commenting on. And like I told Yellojkt, I picked up a LOT of new friends from your place.

jd - Sure, let me grab my cane and hobble over to my rocker. Once upon a time, there was a crazy woman with BIG hair who like to go to nudest camps...
(more to come)

Happy Anniversary Jeff! I had just past year #2 back in September, and celebrated by not posting anything for about a month, talk about counterproductive. Finally started feeling "the groove" again, and came down with some virus.

I miss posting on a regular, although not everyday, schedule and hope to get back in the game, so to speak, soon.

Congratulations Jeff. I look forward to reading four more years worth of your blog.

If you're ever in TN, *drop by. We're like Motel Six. We'll leave the lid up.

I'm a reader, but not always a commenter. That is because I am secretly in love with you and have been stalking you for years.

Lisa @ Boondock Ramblings said...

You know I'm kidding, right?

Lisa @ Boondock Ramblings said...

About stalking you I mean...not the other stuff.

Jeff and Charli Lee said...

roger - Sometimes you don't post very often and other times you post like 9 times a day. You're kind of eclectic that way. ;-) Oh, and I hope that foreign comment is something nice, because I can't read Czechoslovakian.

leeuna - I always thought people hated it when you left the lid up. Or is that the seat? I can never get that straight.

lisa - Aw shucks... just when I thought I had my very first stalker, you had to go get all honest and screw it up.

absepa said...

Congratulations, Jeff! We're all glad you stuck with this blogging thing; how else would we have learned about your weirdo swimming classes?

We'll get the spare room, er, air mattress ready for your visit. You don't mind sleeping under three Cocker Spaniels, do you? They only weigh about 35 pounds each. :)

Jocelyn said...

Congrats, you. I remember, too, when I started blogging and thought, "But how do you get people to read your posts?" Then someone stumbled across my blog and left a comment, and then I keyed into the phenomenon of "blogrolling"--back and forth visits, mutually gratifying.

May you have four more years of cranking out funny posts and making all 180 of us laugh (although you'll probably be at 360 by 2013)...

Jeff and Charli Lee said...

absepa - Not a problem. I'm rated to withstand 5 Cocker Spaniels.

jocelyn - Thank you. It's good to have met you and your nutty Pyramid Man. Take care of Duluth for me, will ya? I don't want to see it all screwed up the next time I come up.

Ed said...

Still crazy after all these years, eh?

You realize you'll be starting your fifth year with post 666...a devilish way to start off.

You're certainly welcome to stay here anytime. Hope you like gnomes...

Happy blogiversary. The first post I read from you, I totally remember. It was your open letter to Ralph Nader.

Happy blogoversary, Jeff! Your blog is one that I check on often (you know, AFTER I check on Roger's blog . . . wife duties . . . ) I have been lurking here for so long, that I feel like you're family. Maybe it's because you live in MN and I have family right there in Minneapolis! Best wishes for years and years of more blogging!! Oh - and if you are brave enough to consider staying at our home (remember, we have seven children!) then you are more than welcome to! I'm not sure why Roger is writing in Czechoslovakian. He is an odd one! ;-)

Cool, it's a fun outlet isn't it! Congrats.

Jeff and Charli Lee said...

ve - Of course I like gnomes... I've been surrounded by them before. We all became very close that day.

april - I was disappointed because he never replied to it. Can you even believe that?

~jenni - Hey, thanks for popping your head up. It's nice to "see" you! I laughed out loud at your answer to Roger's "inconceivable" comment on FB!

carlae - Totally. I don't do things I hate very long.

Aw, so sorry I missed this! Happy Belated Bloggiversary Jeff!!!

Yes, we have a spare room in the basement just waiting for ya... er, we'll just have to kick the daughter out first. But visit in the summer; our winter is as harsh as yours... and the skateboard parks will be open too.

Daughter and I only got as far as Fargo last week, but I was thinking of you when actually contemplating a longer shopping trip... now we'll have to wait till 2010.

Here's to many, many more years of View from the Cloud! Cheers!
