I predict surreptitious skateboarding in 3- 3 1/2 weeks. You might want to lock it in the trunk of your car. He strikes me as a 'cast as a badge of honor' sort of kid. Especially a cast that rocks that hard.

Charlie, my comment about the whole thing being a drag was from the parents' perspective. Trying to figure out ways to keep a cast from toe to hip dry, ways to scratch without tearing skin and causing infection, and yes, trying not to tear out your hair with the whining about nothing to do. While I feel bad for Austin, as a mom, my sympathies are with you. :-)

The itch lasts until the smell arrives. Sometimes the itch comes back and or is in different places. The itches will subside when the cast comes off and your arm feels like a weak pencil.

Isn't that so wonderful to look forward too? But on the plus side you can take a shower without a garbage bag...

Wow! How nice of everyone to send Austin such well wishes although I think it is Jeff and I who need the sympathy. He has officially driven us insane with "aughhh there is nothing to do" "why can't I skate" "this is stupid that I can't snowboard, what am i E-V-E-R going to do." AND it has only been about 32 hours in a cast-help!!! The only good part is he let me rub his back til he fell asleep last night because the itching was so bad, I miss those days. Teens barely say hi to you so to get to spend 20 minutes rubbing the kids back was a little taste of heaven....Mrs. H

At least he broke it in a cool way. Usually when people injure themselves they've done something stupid, like forget to set the parking brake and run themselves over.

We have a friend who's a quadrapalegic. He says he was in the Navy Seals, and that the cause of his condition is highly sensitive and he can't tell. We like to joke that he probably slipped on a wet floor or something and is embarassed to say.

Bummer Austin! I emphasize because I broke the very same arm 11 years ago (five places and have plates to this day). The cast looks hauntingly familiar. Tell him he's lucky, mine was on as a full cast for 12 weeks. Having broken ribs now, I've decided that since Evel Knievel passed on that I would take over his bone breaking legacy. So far its been neck, back, nose, arm, hand, ribs, and toe. Just wait til I get a motorcycle...

Damn, that's a cool cast. You know I've never broken a bone (knock on wood). I tore ligaments when I was 20 or so, but that's about it.

The whole broken bone/cast scenario is such a drag. Especially when you are 700 miles from home, the kid gets the cast soaked and you have to go to Normandale and get it recast.

oh, that blows! If he has to get it replaced at some point, ask about a waterproof cast. It will make showers and such much more reasonable.

That is one sweet looking cast! Not that I ever broke a bone when I was a kid - stitches were more my thing - but they were boringly white. If he has to break a bone or three, at least it's in winter. Plus he can use it to keep unruly councillors in line with an "accidental" whack now and again.

Oh how strange! Your boy almost has his board stolen. Mine did. My boy breaks his collar bone three weeks ago and yours follows suit and then some. Kindred spirits? Great cast. I will definitely have my son check it out. He had a boring old collar strap and looked like Quaisimodo. Get well soon Austin!

Oh, I meant to add, I broke my arm as a kid, and when the cast came off ... mom kept it as a flower vase. Plastic flowers, of course. Until the cast started to smell...which was about a year later. Gotta love moms.
